Hail to the Zulus

SUN CITY, SA (AP) - The long wait is finally over for Sun City owner Curt Whiteside, as the Zulus captured their third BFFL Cup with an easy victory over the Amity Sharks. After winning the first two BFFL Cups in 1991 and 1992, Sun City remained a formidable team with six playoff appearances between 1993 and 2004, but went 12 years without tasting the champagne. After posting a ninth place finish in 2002 with a 4-10-0 records, the Zulus have been a force the last three years, all playoff appearances, going 27-15-0 (.643) with two McNicholas Division titles. Sun City now joins Durango (1997, 1999, 2002) and Vandalay (1996, 2001, 2004) as a three-time BFFL Cup champion.

The Sharks fell in the BFFL Cup for the second consecutive year, this time failing to break the 30 point barrier. Perhaps the emotion of Monday night comeback wins over Durango in both season's semi-finals was too much to carry into the title games. Kudos to John Glancey, though, for turning around the Amity ship after disastrous freshman and sophomore campaigns (8-18-2, .321), notching consecutive 8-6 records with two BFFL Cup appearances.

Cup and Saucer Recaps:
Amity @ Sun City -0.5 - In a pick'em title game, Sun City blasted out to a 43-17 lead and had to watch as the Sharks attemtped a comeback with Todd Heap on Christmas and Corey Dillon on Monday night. Heap and Dillon posted a combined 9 points and the Zulus cruised to the historic win. Sun City's third BFFL title came 13 years after their second, easily the longest gap between championships. No players for either team broke into double-digits, but the Zulus got 9 points each from resurgent Mark Brunell and rookie Cadillac Williams. Amity didn't see any of their starting nine exceed 6 points as they dropped a second consecutive BFFL Cup game.

Vandalay @ Durango -12.5 - Heavy favorite Durango saw a slumping Vandalay squad finally post a good score, but bounced back from a devastating semi-final loss to Amity to win the Saucer game by 11 points. Both teams outscored BFFL Cup winner Sun City, but will have to settle for third and fourth place checks. The Blitz saw three players tally double-digit scores, led by the Pittsburgh Defense and their 19 points. It was the second straight playoff game that the Vandals faced 17 or more points from an opposing defense. Torry Holt's 13 points led the charge for Vandalay, which lost their last four contests of the season after winning three straight Weeks 10-12. Durango had lost four of their last five before winning their second consecutive Saucer.

Pro Bowl:
Division winners Durango and Sun City will coach their respective division squads in the annual Week 17 BFFL Pro Bowl. Each of the two owners will select a starting lineup of 18 players from the teams in their respective division, and each team in the division must be represented by at least two players. Once the league gets the lineups they will be posted here, along with a follow-up of the the outcome.

NFL Playoff Pool:
Once again I will be running the NFL Playoff Pool for family and friends - all are welcome to play (as long as they pony up the $10 entry fee). An e-mail will go out with the rules, but basically each pool participant will select a valid BFFL starting lineup (1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 OFF, and 1 DEF) from the pool of NFL playoff teams. The only restriction is that no NFL team can be represented more than twice in any starting lineup. The lineups are frozen for the life of the NFL playoffs, and the two particpants with the greatest cummulative scores win the prize money (80% and 20%). There have been as many as 32 participants in past years, and hopefully it will grow this year.

Well, the NFL draft is complete, so it's time to start thinking about the BFFL Draft. When will it be? Where will it be? What will we eat?

Let's start with "where": I have no problem hosting again.

Now the "what": I think we'll do pizza this year for a change

And the "when": Ahh, now it gets good. First game is Thur Sept 7th, but Sat Sept 4 is [more]

Thanks. Sorry about all of the crazy posts and e-mails in the first few weeks - I think I was having a nervous breakdown or something. I think once the stat issues cleared up in Weeks 3 and 4, the rest of the season went real well, and I thought the online trax worked very well, once we all got our feet wet. It certainly made things much easier for me.

Thanks for the effort this year, Bobby. Much appreciated! :D
